Building Healthy Behaviours with Young Adults

As a coach working with young adults, I’ve witnessed first hand the transformative power of building healthy habits. Whether it's creating a routine, setting realistic goals, or understanding the importance of mental well-being, the foundation laid in these formative years can influence the rest of their lives.

Coaching provides an ideal framework to guide young adults in developing healthy behaviours that not only serve them in the short term but also set them up for long-term success and happiness.

1. Setting Realistic, Achievable Goals

Many young adults have lofty ambitions, which is fantastic, but they often lack the guidance needed to break these goals down into smaller, manageable steps. As a coach, my role is to help them set SMART goals – those that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.

2. Creating a Supportive Environment

Young adults thrive when they feel supported and creating an environment that fosters healthy behaviour is key. This includes encouraging positive peer relationships and promoting open conversations about mental and physical health.

As a coach, I often advise young adults to surround themselves with like-minded individuals who support their goals and values. Whether it’s finding a fitness buddy, joining a study group, or participating in a club that aligns with their interests, the environment they immerse themselves in plays a significant role in shaping their habits.

3. Fostering a Growth Mindset

It’s easy for young adults to fall into the trap of thinking they need to be perfect. However, fostering a growth mindset – the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through effort and perseverance – is a key part of coaching.

When setbacks inevitably occur, it’s important to help them see these challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, rather than as failures. This shift in perspective helps reduce anxiety and encourages resilience. I regularly remind them that progress is not always linear, but consistency over time is what matters.

4. Balancing Physical and Mental Health

In today’s fast-paced world, young adults often focus on physical health, neglecting the equally important aspect of mental well-being. As a coach, I emphasise the need for balance between the two.

In our coaching sessions, we talk openly about stress management, mindfulness practices and the importance of taking time for self-care. Encouraging young adults to check in with themselves, reflect on how they’re feeling and take action when they need a break is crucial in building lasting healthy habits.

5. Building Long-Term Habits

In coaching, we focus on the small actions they can take every day that will, over time, lead to big results. It’s not about making drastic changes all at once, but rather cultivating behaviours that are sustainable.

For example, setting aside 10 minutes each morning for mindfulness can lead to better focus and reduced anxiety throughout the day.

6. The Role of Accountability

Accountability is a powerful tool in coaching. I often work with young adults to help them track their progress, whether through journaling, using apps, or regular check-ins. Having someone to report back to makes them more likely to stay on track and adjust their approach when necessary.

As a coach, I also play a key role in celebrating their achievements, no matter how small. Recognising progress helps build motivation and keeps them focused on their long-term goals.

Coaching young adults in building healthy behaviours is about more than just giving advice. It’s about empowering them to take ownership of their choices, providing the tools and support they need to succeed and fostering a mindset that embraces growth and learning. By setting realistic goals, creating a supportive environment and promoting balance, we can help young adults build a foundation of healthy habits that will serve them well throughout their lives.
